Vegan Lifestyle:

What springs to mind the minute you hear the word vegan? Is it plates piled high with tofu and veggies? Becoming vegan is not just about eating meatless meals. Veganism is so much more than just a diet, it’s a lifestyle that extends far beyond the food you eat.

What does it mean to be vegan?

In terms of diet, a vegan will exclude all animal products from their meals, including any food products made with the by-products of animals (meat, fish, eggs, honey, and dairy). But choosing a vegan lifestyle means much more than that. Living a vegan lifestyle also means abstaining from anything that exploits animals, including makeup, skincare products, clothing, and home products. Choosing a vegan diet is a personal choice and one that is chosen for a variety of reasons, ranging from ethics and environmental concerns to health.

What are the different types of vegan diets?

Eating a vegan diet doesn’t mean you have to eat a bowl full of tofu and veggies at every meal. Most vegans eat a wide variety of food, including household staples like pizza, and pasta, using plant-based ingredients. Vegans are also likely to eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, herbs, and salads but can also enjoy plant-based cakes, cheese and treats too.

Eating vegan doesn’t mean you have to follow one set of specific criteria either. As people are all different, so are the preferences and motivations for choosing to eat vegan. Some may follow a strict vegan diet, focused on healthy natural foods, while others may choose to add in processed foods and refined sugars. There are a number of dietary paths you can choose as a vegan, including:

  • Whole food vegan diet: The whole food vegan diet is comprised of whole foods, either limiting or eliminating processed foods and refined sugars.
  • 80/10/10 diet: The 80/10/10 diet is a low-fat, raw food diet focused on calorie consumption. People aim to get 80 percent of their calories from complex carbohydrates and 10 percent each from fats and protein. It can be more restrictive than other vegan diets and requires more dedication when it comes to planning and cooking meals.
  • Raw food vegan diet: The raw food vegan diet is focused on consuming more raw foods each day and eliminating processed foods.  Raw foods include fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
  • The Starch Solution: A plan developed by Dr. John McDougall, this plant-based diet is similar to the 80/10/10 diet but focuses on cooked complex carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, and quinoa instead of fruit.
  • Raw till 4: The Raw till 4 plan focuses on eating raw plant-based foods until 4 pm, with the option of having a cooked meal afterwards. The plan ensures you are eating fresh, wholesome foods for the better part of your day.
  • Junk food vegan diet: The junk food vegan diet isn’t exactly like what it sounds, although it does rely heavily on vegan “meats” and “cheeses”, vegan desserts, and other heavily processed vegan foods.
  • While you can choose to follow only one form of the vegan diet, most people tend to mix and follow the diet that best suits their needs and lifestyle.
  • What foods should I avoid as a vegan
  • Meat and poultry: beef, lamb, veal, pork, chicken, turkey, goose, duck, etc.
  • Fish and seafood: all types of fish, anchovies, shrimp, scallops, calamari, crab, lobster, etc.
  • Dairy: milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, cream, ice cream, etc.
  • Eggs: any eggs that come from an animal, including chickens, quails, ostriches, fish etc.
  • Bee products: honey, bee pollen, royal jelly etc.
  • Animal-based ingredients: whey, casein, lactose, egg white albumen, gelatin, isinglass, cochineal or carmine, shellac, l-cysteine, animal-derived vitamin D3 and fish-derived omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Following a vegan diet does mean you will need to be more aware of what you eat and what ingredients are found in the foods you buy. While a food may seem like it is vegan-friendly, it could have an additive that contains an animal-based ingredient like gelatin.
